Nano engineers Sanand’s big boom
Massive Industrialisation Along A’bad’s West-End
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Ahmedabad: Until three years ago, Sanand hardly found a mention in the state’s growth story. A tiny suburb west of Gujarat’s financial capital, this belt has emerged as an industrial hotspot in no time. Sanand is poised to attract investments to the tune of Rs 25,000 crore over the next five to seven years, say senior government officials.
Tata Motors, which shifted its small car manufacturing unit here from Singur in West Bengal, has paved way for Sanand to catapult into the big league. Not just auto companies like Ford and ancillary component makers, Sanand is emerging as an engineering hub.
Already 58 companies have bought land in and around Sanand. Recently, three multinationals have applied to set up plants in the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) estate which is shaping up just outside Nano plant, and inquiries for more are coming not just for the GIDC but also the nearby areas.
South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries will set up a Rs 100-crore unit to manufacture transformers. USA’s Corning Inc has decided to set up an optical fibre plant in the GIDC. A world leader in optical fibres which have literally changed the world, Corning invented the first commercially viable lowloss optical fibre. Its proposed investment is also to the tune of Rs 100 crore.
Bosch Rexroth (India) Ltd, a subsidiary of German automation giant Bosch Group, which provides drive and control solutions for industrial applications, has bought land here. More still, Madhya Pradesh-based Allies Minerals Industries plans to set up a Rs 50-crore plant in the GIDC to manufacture monolithic refractories.
GIDC has stepped up its efforts to acquire land by offering a higher-than-market rate to the farmers to set up its estate in Sanand. “We plan to acquire 2,600 hectares. Of this, we have already acquired 1,500 ha,” a GIDC official said.
Pocket for women entrepreneurs
Sanand will have a women’s economic zone. A women’s wing of an industrial organisation is working on the project. Besides, an electronics park, an agro-industries zone, a plastic engineering zone, a pharmaceutical formulation zone, a logistics park and an auto components park are being proposed in the area.
Mini-Taiwan parks here too
ATaiwanese Electronics Park will come up in the Sanand region. A high-level Taiwanese delegation was in Gujarat recently for negotiations with the state government on the matter, and discussions are continuing. “They want to get out of Taiwan because they do not have enough land to put up big projects. Hence. they have also decided to set up shop in Sanand,” a senior official said.
